2016/17 Calendar Confirmed – Portimao Out – Slovakia Ring In – Races in April, May, June, July – Suzuki and Honda Happy...

The FIM Endurance World Championship Calendar for the 2016/17 season has been confirmed as being as follows:

FIM EWC 2016/2017 Calendar

  • 17/18 September – Bol d’Or (24h) / Le Castellet – France (Already taken place)
  • 15/16 April – 24 Heures Motos / Le Mans – France
  • 20 May – 8 Hours of Oschersleben / Germany
  • 24 June – 8 Hours of Slovakia Ring / Slovakia
  • 30 July – Suzuka 8 Hours / Japan

The scheduled Portimao 12 Hour race has been postponed (ie; cancelled) until the 2017/18 season to “enable Portugal, and the team at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, to consolidate preparations to host a major Endurance race in 2018” to quote the official press release.

Perhaps more significanlty, the Portuguese round was removed because, to quote the official release again, “There was also a risk that the delayed arrival of the new homologated bikes for 2017 would handicap the preparations of some teams.” The teams referred to are presumably SERT Suzuki, with an all new GSX-R1000 launched this winter, and the Honda teams of FCC-TSR and Honda Endurance Racing who will be campaigning the heavily revised CBR1000RR Fireblade.

While it makes sense to delay the first race of the year (although not the first race of the season) to allow the new bikes to be optimised for endurance racing, will we seem the same thing next year when Yamaha and Kawasaki announce revised models and YART, GMT94, Bolliger or SRC Kawasaki need the same pre-race preparation?

Rumours of winter races outside Europe continue, as ever, but meanwhile, here's a little Slovakia Ring taster:
